Downloading an eBook
To download a full copy of an ebook for offline reading on a laptop or desktop computer:
Click on the download button.
If you are on the book's details page, the download button is located under the book's cover image. If you are not already signed in to your Ebook Central account, you will be asked to sign in, either on your library's login page or the Ebook Central login page.
After signing in, or if you are already signed in, you will be asked what kind of device you are using. Ebook Central should detect if you are coming from a laptop/desktop or mobile device and pre-select the appropriate option.
You will be prompted to download Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) first, if you haven’t already.
If you selected "I'm using my own computer" in step 1, you'll see a link to get an Adobe ID and a "Get Adobe Digital Editions" button, which will bring you to the Adobe downloads page for ADE. If you already have ADE, select "Done with this step"
If you selected "I'm using a public computer" in step 1, you'll see a tip recommending you download to your own computer instead. If you choose to download on a public computer and open in Adobe Digital Editions, you may not retain access to the book for the entire loan period or be able to transfer the file to your own device, since downloaded files are associated with the user authorized on that particular instance of ADE. If you'd like to proceed anyway, select 'I Have Adobe Digital Editions'.In Step 3, Select your download length and file type, if there is more than one option provided, and then click the Download button.
You will receive an .acsm file. This file can only be opened by Adobe Digital Editions. Once you open the .acsm file in ADE, the actual book file will be downloaded and open directly in that program (in EPUB or PDF format depending on which file format you selected in step 3). If you are using a public computer we recommend you send the .acsm file to yourself to open in ADE on your own computer later. Please note that you will need to authorize Adobe Digital Editions with an Adobe ID if you'd like to access the ebook on multiple devices. All devices must be authorized to the same Adobe ID in order to share downloaded files.
Once you have downloaded the book, the next time you visit the book's details page you will see the information about the time remaining on your download.
You can also see information about your active downloads on the Bookshelf page.
How do I return an ebook early?
Downloaded and loaned ebooks expire automatically at the end of a loan, and cannot be returned early. Deleting the ebook file from Adobe Digital Editions deletes the ebook file from your device, but does not end the loan.
Downloaded and loaned ebooks appear in your Ebook Central Bookshelf, in the “Downloads and Loans” folder, for the duration of the loan or download period. The time remaining in your loan is displayed in orange.
Downloading eBooks using an iOS device
The process for downloading a full ebook for offline reading on an iOS device using the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) app is similar to the process for downloading a full ebook on a laptop or computer.
First, install the ADE app on your iOS device (iPhone, iPad), and authorize ADE with your Adobe ID. If you do not have an Adobe ID, you will need to create one. ADE will allow you to open and read the full ebook after the ebook is downloaded from Ebook Central.
After installing the ADE app:
Use a browser (Safari, Chrome, etc) on your mobile device to access Ebook Central. Navigate to the ebook you want to download. Please use the Safari browser only for downloading to an iOS device while work on the downloading error in Chrome is being conducted.
Click the "full download" button. You might be prompted to login to Ebook Central.
Then, Ebook Central will provide the following prompts:
What device are you using?: Select your device (iOS).
You will need an ebook reader app: If you have already installed ADE, or other reader app, select "done with this step."
Download your book: Choose the loan length, and click “download.”
Steps for downloading to your iOS device:
After clicking the "download" button, a message should pop up stating, "Do you want to download "737321.acsm?" (The doc ID number will be different depending on what ebook you download).
Click "download" and a small arrow will appear at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Click on the arrow, then click on the document listed.
This will open a screen displaying the file ID, "ACSM files", and the file size. From here, click the arrow in the upper right-hand corner again and if ADE is not listed in the apps, scroll over to "More" and then click "Copy to Digital Editions."
You will then be prompted to select "Open in Digital Editions." From here your ebook will launch in the ADE app.
Downloading Limits
For each book, there is a limit on the number of pages that can be copied, printed, and page/chapter-downloaded per user, per day.
For a user signed in to an Ebook Central account, the default limits within Ebook Central are as follows:
Number of pages from which text can be copied = 20% of a book's total pages
> The tally of copies performed in a book resets every 24 hours.
> Multiple selections copied from the same page count as just one copy.
> Example: for a 200-page book, you can copy text from up to 40 pages every 24 hours.Number of pages that can be printed or page/chapter-downloaded = 40% of a book's total pages
> The tally of prints and page/chapter-downloads performed in a book resets every 24 hours.
> Both "Print to PDF" and "Chapter Download" deduct against the same total.
> Example: for a 200-page book, you can print or page/chapter-download up to 80 pages every 24 hours.A few publishers have set lower copy/print limits than what we have listed here as the defaults. However, regardless of publisher, the tally resets every 24 hours.
If a user is accessing Ebook Central as a guest user (that is, they have selected 'continue as guest' instead of signing in to an account), the copy and print allowances may be lower. For example, the default limits for a guest user are 15% of a book's pages for copy and 30% of the book's pages for print/chapter-download.
For books that are full-downloaded:
There are separate limits on the number of copies and prints that can be performed on the full-download of a book (for example, from within Adobe Digital Editions):
> Number of pages from which text can be copied = 20% of the book's total pages
> Number of pages that can be printed or page/chapter-downloaded = 40% of the book's total pages
> The tally of these copies and prints are unrelated to the copies and prints performed in Ebook Central.
The limits and the pages remaining for each of the above are shown on each book's Detail Page. To see this information while reading a book, click "Book Details" on the side bar to display the details in the left panel.
