Vertical Jump Test (Sargent Jump, Vertical Leap): Power of Leg Muscles
● Vertec Vertical Jump Tester
● Measuring Tape or Vertical Jump Tester attached on a wall (if Vertec Vertical Jump Tester is not available)
To measure his/her standard reach height before doing the test, the person being measured will reach upward and wherever their fingertips reach will be recorded. For the actual test, the person will move away from the Vertical Jump Tester (Vertec or wall) and then vertically jump as high as he/she can, wherein he/she is trying to reach the top with his/her hand. The standard reach height will then be subtracted from the height recorded from the test with the jump. After 3 attempts, the highest attempt will be recorded as the person’s score for power. The score can be compared to the Vertical Jump Norm Table, where ranges of scores are categorized from very poor to excellent in consideration of the person’s sex.
2. Margaria Kalamen Power Test: Power of Lower Extremities
● Stopwatch
● Measuring Tape
● 12 Steps in a Flight of Stairs (mark 3rd, 6th, and 9th steps)
After warming up, the person being tested should stand 6m away from the first step. The person should run towards the stairs and then go up the stairs by only stepping on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th steps. The tester will start the stopwatch once the 3rd step has been stepped on and end it once the 9th step has been stepped on. After conducting and recording 3 trials with short breaks in between, the person’s power can be computed by the following formula:
power = [body weight (kg) x vertical distance between the 3rd and 9th steps (m) x gravity constant (9.8)] / time recorded (s)
