"Peace is the beauty of life. It is sunshine. It is the smile of a child, the love of a mother, the joy of a father, the togetherness of a family. It is the advancement of man, the victory of a just cause, the triumph of truth." - Menachem Begin
Jim Kay is one of the most celebrated children’s book illustrators of all time and when I heard he partnered with J.K. Rowling for the illustrated version of her cult classic series Harry Potter, I knew we are in for a treat. And Jim Kay did not disappoint. His imagination and execution is impeccable and he brought to life characters we have learned to love and shared our childhood. The illustrations were painstakingly rendered and would definitely transport any Potterhead to a time where magic seems believable and snuggling in a corner with a Harry Potter book in hand is bliss. Only a true master can tug at raw emotions through his art and Jim Kay has once again proven why he is one of the best in his craft.
The beauty in Kerby Rosanes' work is in the details. He creates intricate drawings that proves there is beauty in the simplest of things. A lot of his illustrations have been made into coloring books but if I may say so, his expertly done sketches don't need an accompaniment to make them lift from the pages and come to life before your eyes.
Jude DeVir is a creative genius whose illustrations do not merely wow but also impart valuable life lessons. His work is mostly family themed which focuses on the realities of marriage and parenting. He incorporates humor and heartwarming messages with masterfully drawn graphics. I stumbled upon his work while browsing through Deviant Art and I have been hooked on his work ever since.
Carlo Vergara's work for Zsazsa Zaturnnah is a labor of love. There is no question that he is a master of art in his own right but his brilliance doesn't stop there. He has created the character of Ada who hits close to home to many of our transexual sisters. She carries their rainbow colored banner with much pride and honor. I admire how Vergara has made her not only an icon but also a beacon of hope. With every stroke, line and dialogue, you will see how much of Vergara's heart and soul is also in Ada. Whether she is the powerful superheroine Zsazsa Zaturnnah fending off one villain after another or the simple and kind hairstylist in your neighborhood salon, Ada is truly one of the most unforgettable heroines to have graced Philippine graphic novels, theaters and cinemas.
