Project concept statement
For my final project, I will create a song cover of “MONA LISA” by j-hope. As a fan of J-Hope and Korean pop music, I am inspired by his creative artistry and want to interpret his work through my style using limited equipment (a laptop, headset, and small microphone). My goal is to produce an expressive, well-edited cover track that demonstrates both technical ability and personal musical sensibility. Covering MONA LISA specifically enables me to explore my vocal interpretation and basic music production skills within a focused, attainable project scope.
Project Plan
Week 1: Project idea approval, research on original song, and collection of instrumental/backing track.
Week 2: Workspace setup and equipment testing, initial vocal practice.
Week 3: Recording sessions (multiple takes), initial edits.
Week 4: Mixing and mastering using available software.
Week 5: Final review, export, and sharing/publication of the finished cover.
Key Milestones
Obtain go-signal from instructor or forum peers by end of Week 1.
Finish all raw vocal recordings by the end of Week 3.
Have a completed mix ready for review by end of Week 4.
Final product published and reflected upon by end of Week 5.
Logistics
Recording & Mixing Environment
I will set up a temporary recording area in my bedroom for noise reduction, using curtains and soft furnishings to dampen external sounds and control reverb. I will record vocals directly into my laptop using a small condenser microphone connected via a USB adapter, with my headset plugged in for monitoring.
Equipment List
Laptop (for recording/editing)
Headset (for monitoring)
Small microphone (USB, unidirectional)
Vocal signals will travel from my mouth to the microphone, which converts the sound to an electrical signal. The USB input carries it directly to my laptop, where Audacity captures it as digital audio. During recording, the backing track is played in my headset to avoid bleed into the microphone. All mixing (combining, editing, effects) is done in software, and the final product is exported as a high-quality MP3 or WAV for sharing.
Self - Reflection
My main motivation is to build confidence in vocal recording and basic music production. I expect challenges with noise control and achieving a professional-sounding mix, but I am keen to learn hands-on. Personally, I hope to improve my comfort level with singing, technical production, and expressing myself artistically. I’m setting the bar high for the final mix quality and vocal delivery, emulating standards in K-pop covers. Where might I need help? Advice on vocal mixing and mastering would be valuable, as well as feedback on my initial project idea and arrangement choices. I will document my process with photos of my setup, describe my acoustic environment and workflow in my blog, and honestly reflect on any difficulties encountered.
