A. Objectives
Expressive objective: To empathize with displaced people who struggle to maintain their identities as a result of injustices they faced
Instructional Objectives
To develop critical thinking through an analysis of a chosen poem
To write a persona poem about another person

A. Subject Matter
Theme: Beauty in Diversity and and Inclusion
Topic: Unboxing: Discovering the Real Meaning of Different and Unique, and Celebrating Uniqueness

Skills Development: Analyzing contextual meaning of the poem conveyed by the literary technique (i.e., allusion) employed by the author

The Mango Poem by Regie Cabico
This poem provides a glimpse of Asian specifically Filipino heritage and past that may lead readers to identifying many ways as to how one may exist in different places but will always have a specific home culture and heritage within them.
Pre-Reading Activities: Developing concepts, Activating Prior Knowledge, and Developing Purpose for Reading
Teacher and Students will look at various photos and have a discussion (full instructions and photos can be found in Appendix LP 1)
Teacher and students will read the poem.
First the teacher will read it solely
During this time teacher will focus on more difficult words (words can be found in Appendix LP 1)
Second as a class
Third in Pairs
Fourth, the teacher will read it one more time with questions (questions can be found in Appendix LP 1)
Teacher will show this YouTube Video of Regie Cabico reading the poem. (link to youtube can be found in Appendix LP 1)
Roleplay- Groups will act out only stanza (full instructions can be found in Appendix LP 1)
Teacher will lead the class in a Discussion. (questions can be found in Appendix LP 1 under discussion)
Skills development- Students will learn how to write a Persona Poem (full instructions can be found under Appendix LP 1)
For further Enrichment Activities students can role play their poems that they wrote.
IV. Assessment
A Formative Assessment will be the roleplays that the students perform in part two under post reading.
A Summative Assessment will be assessed using the rubric found under Appendix LP 1
