113.3MHz Wryn Mayer Radio!
(A Mock Radio Show Skit)
University is nothing like I thought it’d be. I mean, when I was younger, I never gave much thought to college because I was mainly focused on high school (also not like my expectations). I did, however, dream about the college extracurriculars I would have loved to join: clubs, festivals, volunteer work, and college radio shows.
I also grew up watching stuff like Radio Rebel, Pitch Perfect, and Kpop radio interviews. Also, y’know, listening to it on the way to and from school (shoutout to 96.5 Radio Bahrain). It’s an appealing idea that I’ve wanted to explore in some format; so why not try it out as a Final Project?
It’s my final term before I graduate, so this seems like a better time than never to just try out whatever I can. Originally, I had planned on taking courses in videography and scriptwriting, but was unable to due to the conflicts in my schedule, so in a way, doing something akin to that would help fulfil my creative desires.
How ambitious of me.
The name ‘113.3MHz Wryn Mayer Radio’ is a portmanteau of references. 113.3MHz is meant to be a play on radio station numbers (representing the frequency radio stations broadcast on), with 113.3 being my birthday, Nov. 3, 2003, while also calling back to a show that I was personally inspired by - 37.5MHz Haechan Radio. Wryn Mayer comes from the Blank House game Keyframes. It’s an otome game/visual novel set in a university where the player finds love, friendship and adventure! I hold it dear to my heart, and so I wanted to honour it.
I had a small outline of what I wanted to do in mind already, borne of an amalgamation of ideas. Firstly, I need to come up with a script, which should be fun considering my love for writing dialogue. Crafting a short narrative should also be simple enough. The final storyline hasn’t been concretely decided yet, but this skit will follow the typical format for radio shows; i.e an intro, background music, small talk, and an interview portion. This skit will strictly be audio-only, as I am sorely inequipped to execute a video format.
Off the top of my head, I’ll need:
A radio jingle
A skit script
Actors (who will be my best friend, Eishi, and my boyfriend, Aiden; I, too, will be included)
Instrumentals
Soundboard effects (potentially)
Let this be my acknowledgement that I am inexperienced in sound production AND post-production in general, so the bulk of my time will be taken up on learning and practising. I’ll be trying my best to keep the project within my means.
I will be recording and working on the project from a couple of locations, depending on which one is more suitable for my needs. Neither are formal studios. The main locations will be:
My living room study corner, which is surrounded by curtains and furniture. This area will largely be used for post-production editing rather than recording.
2. My partner’s computer desk in his room. While smaller, it is much more isolated and features better soundproofing. Another reason I will be utilising this second location is that I will be borrowing some of his equipment when needed. (Note: here you can see one of the microphones I will be using, as well as the plushies Rupert and sleepy cat for morale support)
I’m an unemployed uni student who still lives with my family. I do not have the time, money, or space for equipment, especially if it’s not going to be a long-term passion of mine. However, I have connections and know people who may be able to source (re: lend) me such.

I tend to work best by overpreparing in the beginning stages, so that way, I can account for any spontaneous changes. It’s also just good to have alternatives.
I plan on using both the Snowball iCE and Maono XLR microphones in the project, but I am currently unsure for which tracks and which lines. I have little experience with the mics on hand, as I’ve only been using the Snowball for recording video assignments and online calls/meetings for about a month now. I have heard the resulting audio of both mics, and they both are of excellent quality (in my opinion), so it’ll be more of a matter of convenience in choosing which to utilise. Ideally, my actors will use different microphones. As far as I’m aware, the electric guitar prop will be connected to an amp, and the resulting sound will be picked up by one of the microphones. All signal inflow will be put through the HyperX audio mixer interface and into Audacity.
Signal Inflow
Signal Outflow
I consider this high-priority but I have to set time aside to allow for other subjects, which are pretty high-demanding (video essays and the like). I have about 4-5 weeks to execute the project. I don’t intend to cram this but I will be forced to manage my time better!
I really don’t want to overextend myself so I will be trying to work on these activities within the same timeframe. Due to the use of actors, I will be dedicating days solely for recording in order to maximize efficiency (and hopefully lessen the # of takes). I hope to use minimal sound effects; I want to utilise virtual instruments for a radio jingle.
I plan to record the following tracks, which may or may not be subject to change:
2-3 vocal tracks
Radio jingle
Sound effects/instrumentals
Ad melody
Electric guitar (real)
The one, the only, Soundcloud! I know several people who upload covers and original music on there, plus I used to frequent it before I started using Spotify. Yep!
It's a great place for music creators to showcase their work, and frankly, I love the UI!
I could have done something way simpler, but I would’ve been just as clueless. And also my mind lit up like a lightbulb having an identity crisis. The idea just came to me, and it’s my duty to push myself to try and push myself out of my comfort zone. I had the same mindset for MMS 173, and that was the most fun I’ve had doing a course project in the two years I’ve been a UPOU student! Hopefully, the same can be said for this course come the end result.
There is definitely a conflict on when I can record, my environment isn’t the quietest of the bunch, and I feel as though I’ll be forced to stay up late in order to be able to work (which is why I’ve designated a second location).
My friend Eishi is a frequent collaborator of mine, and I believe that she is an amazing singer and performer/actress. I hope to utilise her talents to the best of my ability. I also think it’s fun to put on a little skit, I used to write draft scripts back in high school assemblies!
I want to have fun with this project, to go all out (again, if I’m able to) while also pushing myself to take this seriously and improve. This will be my motivation, and potentially my swan song or stand-in for a thesis project because AADDA students don’t actually have that requirement.
Godspeed y’all!
