In celebration of the National Women’s Month and in support of the Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender equality, the Human Resource Development Office, in collaboration with the Center for Gender and Women Studies, held the webinar entitled “Navigating Work-life Integration as a Woman'' via zoom on March 20, 2024, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. With the aim to delve into the challenges faced by women both in their personal and professional lives and explore the different techniques that can be utilized in navigating such issues, the HRDO engaged the expertise of Dr. Shiela Marie “Shake” G. Hocson, Director of Guidance and Counseling at the Far Eastern University Manila, to lead the webinar.
The webinar was held with the following objectives: (1) define and discuss the concept of work-life balance emphasizing its importance for employees’ well-being and overall productivity; (2) recognize the signs of work-life imbalance and its potential impact on physical and mental health; (3) determine challenges women may face in balancing professional and personal responsibilities; and (4) determine the proper ways to address the challenges faced by women through a workshop as part of the office’s campaign to promote a healthy work-life balance and well-being for women in the workplace.
The webinar started with setting expectations for the program and was followed by Dr. Shake’s discussion on the current situation brought about by digitalization. She also provided a way to remember warning signs of possible mental health issues faced by an individual. For most of the webinar, the focus was on the concept of work-life integration, which is a holistic approach that seeks to blend personal and professional needs with the goal of finding areas of compromise and energy. The last part of the webinar centered on the mindfulness technique and how it can be incorporated into the participants’ daily lives.
Albeit held through a virtual platform, the webinar was made interactive by Dr. Shake. The flow of the program helped employees to actively participate by sharing about their own experiences and struggles in between topics. This allowed participants to learn not just from the resource speaker’s discussion, but also through their fellow participants’ stories. As one participant commented, “The whole session was fun and at the same time very educating.”
