Our academic life will be very different this semester, so to help you cope with the changes, here are some reminders and tips to help manage your workload.
Make sure you have activated your up.edu.ph email account. This will allow you to access the recommended learning management systems of the University. In Diliman, most of your professors will be using UVLê or Google Classroom to deliver class content.
Most of all, your up.edu.ph account will give you access to University resources such as the Main Library's and CMC Library's digital content, Microsoft applications, and Google online storage.
The University calls this semester's learning experience remote learning. The lessons will be guided by course guides, and class content materials will be delivered to you through what are called course packs. The course guides are extended versions of our syllabi. The course packs contain learning materials such as readings, links to resources online. Your professors will provide these for you on your first day.
In case you missed it, our semester was shortened from 16 weeks to 14 weeks. The University Academic Calendar will contain more information about other University activities. Check back here for updates or to get a copy of the calendar. The calendar will also be made available on the official UP Website.
Class interactions will happen through video conferencing apps and software. The University will use Zoom and Google Meet, both available with your up.edu.ph accounts. However, we may also interact with each other informally through other free apps with reliable encryption features. Contact your professors to find out which apps will be most accessible and convenient for your purpose.
The University knows that not everyone has access to reliable internet service. Many students also don't have the gadgets and equipment to make remote learning easy and efficient. To address this situation, the University is working on a system that will allow students to receive the course guides and course packs physically. Watch out for official announcements from the College, or the UP Administration.
Many articles and reports online show that though remote learning might seem convenient, it isn't always easy or comfortable. There are reports that video conferencing saps our energy and that it takes more time to go through or prepare for a class delivered remotely because of conditions that may not be readily obvious.
This webpage from Minnesotta State University shares some tips on how to be a successful online learner.
There are lots of tips online about how to manage the workload for remote learning. To save you some time, start with this quick list from Dr. Chip Palmer of Pfeiffer University
Set and accomplish goals. Break down work into smaller tasks and stay on top of them. Fight procrastination by finding creative ways to be accountable. You can buddy up with a friend or classmate and develop shared checklists.
Manage your time well. Set up a planner and mark-out due dates for assignments, exams, online meetings. It's important to also assess how much time you spend on the tasks. It's helpful to time-box your tasks so you are focused on finishing one before jumping into another. Make sure you double check your calendar, syllabi and class LMS. Don't forget to check email, too--but at specific times in the day!
Maintain a routine. Try to wake up at the same time each day and create a regular schedule for working on your classes, i.e., assign a certain day for each class or assign block of time to accomplish work.
Engage in your classes. Take notes as you would in a face-to-face class. Participate by providing meaningful responses and carrying on a dialogue on fora by replying to classmates' and instructors' posts. Do your best on homework and class activities.
Make use of the resources available to you. Communicate with your professor, your classmates; explore the online collections of the Library.
