As an Assistant Professor of Hydrology and Environmental Science at the University of Duhok, I believe academia is more than teaching and research—it's about shaping minds, building partnerships, and contributing meaningfully to the world around us. This page offers an overview of my academic roles and activities that reflect my passion for environmental science, student development, and lifelong learning.
Teaching is one of the most fulfilling parts of my academic career. I’ve had the privilege to design and deliver courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, primarily in the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences. My teaching portfolio includes:
Hydrogeology and Groundwater Flow
Water Resources Management
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
Introduction to Geochemistry and Environmental Chemistry
Research Methods and Scientific Writing
I use a blended approach that integrates lectures, case studies, field visits, and hands-on lab training. My goal is not just to teach theory, but to cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills that students will carry into their careers.
Mentorship is something I take to heart. I actively supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, guiding them through research projects related to:
Groundwater quality monitoring
Soil and water contamination
Drought and climate change impacts
Sustainable water resource strategies
Environmental health in refugee and post-conflict settings
I encourage my students to approach real-world problems with scientific curiosity and social awareness. Many of their projects feed directly into larger research initiatives I am leading.
Research is the bridge between knowledge and action. I am deeply committed to interdisciplinary, applied research that serves both academic advancement and community wellbeing.
Some of my current research focuses on:
Groundwater vulnerability and hydrochemical modeling
Heavy metals and pharmaceutical contaminants in urban and rural water systems
Climate-induced water stress on agriculture and natural ecosystems
Environmental risks in refugee camps and marginalized areas
I collaborate with international institutions like IHE Delft, University of Bordeaux, and regional partners including NGOs, water authorities, and ministries. These collaborations bring depth to my work and expand its impact across borders.
Over the years, I have been honored with several opportunities that have advanced my academic journey, including:
ERASMUS MUNDUS scholarship for PhD study at the University of Bordeaux
Research grants and partnerships through USAID and international donors
Conference presentations at global forums such as the EGU (Vienna), IAH (Canada, Australia, Morocco), and the International Geological Congress
These recognitions are not just accolades—they are motivators that reaffirm my commitment to research that matters.
I consider myself a lifelong learner—not just by profession but by principle. My journey from the forests of Wales (during my MSc), to the aquifers of France (during my PhD), and now to the evolving environmental landscape of Iraq has taught me that learning never ends.
Whether I'm updating my skills in GIS and modeling, participating in workshops, or engaging with young researchers, I strive to grow alongside my students and colleagues.
Knowledge is dynamic, and as a scientist, educator, and citizen, I see learning as a continuous path—one I am always excited to walk.
If you're a student eager to explore research, a colleague looking to collaborate, or simply someone curious about water and the environment—I'd be delighted to connect with you.
