Academic Eulogy for Professor (Mrs.) Thushyanthy Mikunthan - By Senior Prof.P.Ravirajan
Academic Eulogy for Professor (Mrs.) Thushyanthy Mikunthan
(21 April 1964 – 23 November 2025)
It is with profound sorrow, yet deep gratitude, that we honour the life and legacy of Professor (Mrs.) Thushyanthy Mikunthan, an accomplished academic and a steadfast pillar in the development of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Jaffna.
Born on 21 April 1964 in Usan, Mirusuvil, and later residing in Kandarmadam, Jaffna, she was nurtured in a family where education was both vocation and virtue. Her academic journey began at Ramanathan Maha Vidyalayam, Usan, and continued at Chavakachcheri Hindu College. She graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Agriculture from the University of Peradeniya in 1990 and later obtained her MPhil in Water Management from the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture in 1997. In a testament to her loyalty to her home institution, she earned her PhD in Groundwater Management from the University of Jaffna in 2010, thereby contributing directly to the strengthening of its research culture.
Her scholarship centred on water management, irrigation and drainage engineering, applied and groundwater hydrology, waste management, and soil and water conservation. In a region where water security defines agricultural sustainability, her research addressed pressing societal needs and reinforced the Faculty of Agriculture as a centre of applied, regionally responsive science.
Professor Thushyanthy Mikunthan’s academic career reflected steady progression and unwavering dedication, from her appointment as a Temporary Assistant Lecturer in 1991 to her elevation as Professor of Agricultural Engineering in 2013. Yet her most enduring legacy lies in university development and governance. As Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture from 2015 to 2018, she guided the faculty through a period of consolidation and growth. She strengthened academic programmes in alignment with national quality standards, expanded research engagement, supported infrastructure and laboratory development, and enhanced student welfare systems. She firmly believed that true institutional development harmonised academic rigour, administrative integrity, and compassionate leadership.
Her repeated service as Head of the Departments of Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Chemistry, and in acting capacities for Agronomy and Agricultural Economics, reflected the confidence placed in her balanced judgement and managerial competence. At the university level, she served on and chaired Boards of Study within the Faculty of Graduate Studies, elevating postgraduate standards and research quality. As Coordinator and Liaison Officer for the COL–RIM International External Review, she played a vital role in strengthening the university’s quality assurance culture and institutional credibility.
Beyond the university, she contributed actively to the Jaffna Science Association and the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as to national examination processes, reflecting her enduring commitment to scientific advancement and educational excellence.
Her life stands as a testament to gender equity in academic leadership. In a traditionally male-dominated discipline, she rose to the highest rank through merit, perseverance, and quiet determination; while remaining a devoted wife to Professor G. Mikunthan and a loving mother whose children reflect her academic inspiration and values.
Her passing leaves a profound void in the Faculty of Agriculture; yet her legacy endures in strengthened departments, empowered graduates, and the culture of quality she so diligently nurtured. In remembering her, we honour not only a distinguished scholar, but a true builder of the Faculty of Agriculture and a mentor to generations.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
