7th Grade Physical Education

Middle School Physical Education Grading Policy

Students will be able to earn 10 points per day they have physical education class. 2 points are for the correct physical education clothing (tennis shoes (non-marking), shorts/wind pants, and a different t-shirt/sweatshirt than what was worn to school that day) and 8 points for participation (good listening skills, participating to the best of their abilities, teamwork, and showing good character). Physical education grades will be entered at the end of each week. If your son/daughter misses any class time due to any event that is NOT a school function, they will have to fill out a PE Makeup Sheet in order to receive their daily points. For each class period missed, the student needs to workout, run/jog, and/or do any physical activity that raises his/her heart rate for 30 minutes. For example, if you and your family go on vacation and your son/daughter misses 3 class periods, he/she will have to make up 90 minutes of activity. However, if during vacation your son/daughter goes swimming for 90 minutes or more, they can use that activity to make up their daily points. But, you HAVE to fill out a make up sheet to make it count. Almost all activities that raise the heart rate will work, but if you have questions, please contact me for further information. The sheets can be either: submitted electronically, emailed back to me or the students can bring them back to me at school.

**The Physical Education Make Up Sheet is located to the left under this class's tab**

Unity Middle School believes physical education is an integral part of a student's education. While in middle school, each student will have physical education every other day for approximately 45 minutes. The goal of each class period is to instruct students so there is growth in each domain of learning: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Each student is required to change into PE clothes each class period.

Physical education has many benefits. Studies have shown that physical education/physical activity can build and maintain healthy bones, joints and muscles. Also, it helps to control weight, build lean muscle, and reduce fat. Furthermore, studies have found that students who participate fully in PE classes have a greater chance to do well in school. There is a link between grades and physical activity. Our physical education curriculum focuses on building skills to help students do well in team sports, individual sports, weight lifting, and lifelong activities. As a committee, the physical education team uses FitnessGram as our fitness assessment tool. FitnessGram is the only health-related fitness assessment to use criterion-referenced standards, called the Healthy-Fitness Zones, to determine students' levels based on what is optimal for good health. FitnessGram assesses a student's aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and flexibility. We then use the information gathered to track our students and see where there is growth and where there are needs for improvement.

We have also added TrainHeroic to the PE curriculum. During our swimming unit, we split up the genders and while one gender swims, the other gender will be in the new fitness center learning how to perform weight lifting techniques safely. The students really seem to enjoy challenging themselves in the weight room! While in the fitness center, the students will learn how to do the core lifts (bench press/parallel squat/power clean/incline bench press/front squat), while also learning how to perform the auxiliary lifts.
