Unity Middle School 6th Grade Health Education Class:
Students at Unity Middle School are required to take 6th grade health education. Each section of 6th grade health lasts for 1 trimester. Throughout the student's experiences in 6th grade health they will be presented with information about ways to live healthy and be given the tools and techniques to help them do so. Each of Unity Middle School's health classes coincide with each other. 6th grade health is used as a baseline class whereas students will learn the necessary information and skills that will help them achieve success in 7th and 8th grade health. All of Unity Middle School health education classes follow the Wisconsin Health Education Academic Standards developed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
During a student's 12 weeks in 6th grade health they can expect to learn/study the following topics:
-Relationships/Communication: positive and negative health choices, strategies to express needs, wants, and feeling appropriately, and how to resolve conflicts in a healthy way.
-Responsibility/Decision-Making: learning how to analyze their actions and understanding consequences, substance use/abuse (Slick Tracy), human growth and development, and sexually transmitted diseases.
-Self-Confidence/Goal-Setting: understanding themselves mentally, emotionally, socially, and physically. Verbal and nonverbal communication skills will be used to achieve/maintain healthy relationships with family and friends.
-Character Education: learning the aspects/traits/terms of character education and keeping a character education journal.
-Nutrition: learning how to read a food label, My Plate, balance of calorie intake and output, and the 6 essential nutrients.
