Unity Middle School 7th Grade Health
Students at Unity Middle School are required to take 7th grade health. In fact, Unity School District allows students to meet health graduation requirements while in middle school by successfully passing a quarter of health in both seventh (7) and eighth (8) grades. Throughout the student experience in 7th grade health they will be presented with information and the knowledge to help them live healthy and they will be given the tools and techniques to help them do so. All of Unity Middle School health education classes follow the Wisconsin Health Education Academic Standards developed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
During a student's 9 weeks in 7th grade health, they can expect to learn about/study the following topics:
-Wellness: the seven (7) dimensions of wellness will be discussed and will be related to the entire content presented to students in this class.
-Violence and Injury Prevention: students will learn the impact of violence, bullying, and hazing. Students will also learn the difference between intentional and unintentional injuries.
-Nutrition: students will learn more in-depth information about how My Plate can benefit them, the importance of eating healthy foods, fast food nutrition, and how nutrition and a healthy body are correlated.
-Substance Use and Abuse: students will analyze the impact of substance use/abuse, decision-making skills, and how substance use/abuse can lead to a life full of unhealthy decisions. Students will also learn to analyze information about different drugs in order to understand the relationship between a positive lifestyle and risky one.
-Body Systems: working together in pairs, students will analyze one body system of the body and the important functions/tasks it performs. Also, students will be responsible for learning/studying all 10 body systems they are presented with in class.
-Amazing Alternatives: students will follow 4 fictional 7th graders in their journey over an eight week period. The fictional characters will be presented with many decisions as they pertain to alcohol use. Amazing Alternatives is the next curriculum after Slick Tracy, which the students follow in 6th grade health. Amazing Alternatives and Slick Tracy are part of Project Northland, which is developed by Hazleden. This curriculum is specifically developed for 7th graders and backed by research to curb teenage alcohol use.
