I want to remind you that we all carry within us a light that can brighten the darkest of rooms and we need that in these dark times.
Abdul Hayee (8 March 1921 – 25 October 1980), popularly known by his pen name (takhallus) Sahir Ludhianvi, was an Indian poet who wrote primarily in Urdu in addition to Hindi.[1] He is regarded as one of the greatest film lyricist and poets of 20th century India.[2]
His work influenced Indian cinema, in particular Hindi language films.
khoon apna ho ya paraaya ho
nasl-e-aadam ka khoon hai aakhir
jang mashriq mein ho ki maghrib mein
amn-e-aalam ka khoon hai aakhir
Whether blood be ours or theirs,
It’s the blood of mankind
Whether wars be waged in the east or the west,
It is the murder of world-peace
bam gharo par giren ki sarhad par
rooh-e-taameer zakham khaati hai
khet apne jalen ki auron ke
zeest faaqon se tilmilati hai
Whether houses be bombed or borders,
The temple of soul is wounded
Whether our farms be torched or others,
It is life that convulses with hunger
tank aage badhein ki piche haten
kokh dharti ki baanjh hoti hai
fatah ka jashn ho ki haar ka sog
zindagi mayyaton pe roti hai
Whether tanks roll forward or retreat,
The earth’s womb is desecrated
Whether it’s the celebration of victory or mourning of loss,
It is life that weeps at the graveside
jang to khud hi ek mas'ala hai
jang kya masailon ka hal degi
aag aur khoon aaj bakhshigi
bhook aur ehtiyaaj kal degi
War is a problem itself,
how will war resolve problems
Today it will rain fire and blood,
Tomorrow, hunger and scarcity
is liye ai shareef insaano
jang taltee rahe to behtar hai
aap aur ham sabhi ke aangan mein
Shamaa jalti rahe to behtar hai
Thus, o’ all people of decency,
It is better if war is averted
And better too, if in our courtyards
The flame of peace flickers ceaselessly
