Junior year usually marks a turning point. This is because for most students and families, it’s when college planning activities kick into high gear. Here are some things you can do this year to get the best options.
Review your SchooLinks assessments. Maps out classes, including electives based on your Career Cluster. Look Here!
Review Bloomington Area Career Center programs; remember TRADES/Vocational Schools are a great route to take too!
Review course descriptions further in the Course to Career Guide in your SchooLinks account under the "School" tab.
Select courses with school counselor. Apply for BACC if necessary.
Set goals for the school year and stay motivated and focused.
Get involved, explore and commit to extracurricular activities.
Take the optional PSAT in October. Must register in advance.
Prepare for the optional ACT. Check online for testing dates.
If you’re interested in playing college sports, make sure you research the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as early as your freshman year. NCAA Eligibility Center
Make a list of potential colleges of interest in your SchooLinks account.
Attend college fairs, college nights, and rep visits. Sign-up in your SchooLinks account to visit with reps that come to NCHS September through November.
Speak to representatives from colleges that attend your high school.
Plan campus visits with their admission offices.
Create a resume and add any awards and involvements to use in a letter of recommendation/college application.
Build relationships with your teachers as they are the ones who you will most likely ask for the letter of recommendation.
Stay involved with extracurricular and volunteer activities.
Study for the ACT/SAT.
Research careers and corresponding majors.
Job shadow in career field if possible.

Sign up for challenging classes for your senior year. Take a Dual-Credit/AP course, if appropriate.
Get ready to take the ACT by taking free test prep through Khan Academy
Take the school-wide ACT (April)---Grad Requirement--- along with optional SAT test. Check website for testing dates.
Set up appointments at your top college choices OR trade school, including a tour of the campus and meet with a professor/coach (Spring Break is a great time to visit!)
Start making summer plans to visit additional colleges and trade schools and begin to narrow choices.
Explore interests and learn new skills, including an internship or job.
Finish junior year STRONG! 2nd semester's GPA is what you're putting on college applications as a senior in the fall.
Work a summer job to gain experience, build a resume, and save money for college.
Start building your Final List of colleges in SchooLinks.
Review application requirements for essays/personal statement and start writing them.
Talk to others about their experience in college.
Consider retaking the SAT/ACT to improve score.
