It is very important to pack according to the guidelines. Please pay particular attention to the kind of clothing and foot wear you will need, especially if you will be doing one of the longer treks.

GETTING THERE & AWAY

TRAIN

Overnight soft-sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai (8 hours) and hotel minibus from Lao Cai Train Station to Sa Pa (1 hour)

Students in 4-berth cabins. Separate male and female.

BUS

Sa Pa Express bus service from Hanoi to Sa Pa (5.5 hours)

HOME STAYS

Sleeping arrangements

Home stay sleeping is usually in communal rooms (separate male/female) with mattresses on the floor or beds. Blankets are supplied. At times, there may be use of homestays with smaller rooms.

Will my home stay bed have a mosquito net?

Yes, all the accommodation used have mosquito nets.

What kind of toilets will there be?

Most home stays have western toilets, but a small minority use a squat toilet

Will I be able to take a shower after my trek?

Yes. Most of the home stays we use have a shower room/s. However, some only have a large tub of water for you to wash in. You will obviously need to organise a roster to use the showers.

Food

The food (breakfast and evening meals) will be basic but of good quality. Tofu, meat, eggs, vegetables, spring rolls, instant noodles, etc. Drinks will be available to purchase and there will be water to refill water bottles.

Do I need to bring any money?

Nearly everything on the trip is provided for you. The only thing you will need money for is to purchase your own snacks and buy soft drinks and souvenirs. Avoid bringing a lot of money!
