WAYMARKING

While geocaching is about treasure hunting for containers in unique locations, waymarking is all about visiting new places and just exploring what is there. Waymarking … is the creation of signs/points on a map sign used to mark out a route, especially a footpath or bridle path. A waymark is a physical location on the planet marked by coordinates (latitude/longitude). Much like geocaching, waymarking uses GPS technology to pinpoint locations tag them for other waymarkers to visit, along with pictures and instructions on what to do to prove you were there. Many waymarkers take photos at their locations and post them with their visit.

TASK

TASK: Your task is to 'waymark' or 'geotag' your walk/trek during the field trip to Sa Pa. You will need to:

work in small groups (three/four persons)
use a geotagging app on your mobile phone to make/record gps locations on your route on a regular basis
take photos of the gps locations, including any interesting or important landmarks/places of geographical interest ( Your photographs should show diversity and may include the following: plants, animals, scenery, architecture, culture ).
on return to school after the trip, export your gps data in a KML format file
import the KML file* into Google Earth
add your photos to the Google Earth map
present your interactive map to others

*KML files are specially formatted files for Google Earth that contains data to allow them to be viewed in the Google Earth desktop application.

GeoImgr is a simple web-tool for geotagging photos and images. It can read and write gps geo coordinations from exif headers of jpg-images.
