Middle school at UNIS covers grades 5 (Middle 1) through 8 (Middle 4). In Middle School, students leave the safety and security of a single homeroom teacher to 4 teachers for their core subjects, known in UNIS as MESH (Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities).
The middle school years can be tumultuous -- especially socially and emotionally. Young adolescents are not simply older elementary school students nor younger high school students, but because of the dramatic changes that occur during this stage of adolescence, students require a radically an approach to education that takes those needs into account.
Middle school students thrive on peer relationships and social-emotional feelings and situations can often distract and consume them. Emotional shifts can be sudden and intense. Students can become extremely self-conscious and often are exploring aspects of personal identity as they navigate daily life at school.
In order to support students during this time of growth and change in so many areas, effective middle school instruction at UNIS includes:
Middle School students benefit from a rich, engaging program that includes: English/ Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Humanities, French/ Spanish, Science, Art, Music, Library, Physical Education, Technology, Health, Theater Arts and for students needing support in either English or academics, ELL and Learning Support.
For information about the curriculum for each grade, see the Curriculum page
The Middle School music program is performance based. Middle 1 students take instrumental lessons during the school day leading to a choice of ensemble groups in Middle 2, 3 and 4. The ensemble groups are: Band, strings, chorus, and percussion. Ton participate in one of the instrumental groups, a student must be taking private lessons. No lessons are required for chorus.
Middle School students have a semester of theater arts - M3 and M4 in the fall and M1 and M2 in spring. The classes meet weekly and are run by Broadway Classroom. Broadway Classroom brings working professionals in acting, vocals, dance, choreography, etc. to teach our students the various components that are part of a Broadway production.
The importance of technology in our daily lives is undeniable. As technology continues to advance in our lives, it is important that our students become literate and responsible digital citizens.
Each student in middle school receives a Chromebook. The Chromebook remains the property of UNIS, Guidelines for the use of technology are discussed with the students and can be found in the Student and Parent Handbook or on the Technology page on this site.
