A selection of papers from the conference will be published in the forthcoming edited open access volume: Cattaneo, Angelo, and Simone Celani (eds), Intersecting Sub-Saharan Africa (1450–1700); currently under contract with CNR Edizioni and Sapienza University Press (Series Bridges) (forthcoming 2027).
THIRD INTERNATIONAL ‘MAT CONFERENCE 2026’
Mapping and Translating Spaces, Cultures and Languages. The Missions Connected to the Portuguese Empire (1540-1700)

The event gathered 24 scholars from 5 different countries; engaged researchers from different disciplines—historians, linguists, and art historians; and explored in greater depth one of the two core foci of the project, namely Sub-Saharan Africa and China.
The conference presentations were recorded and are currently undergoing post-production and video editing in preparation for their open-access dissemination as YouTube videos on the Sapienza and CNR ISEM channels. They will shortly be made available in the “Recordings” section of the project website
Editorial Output
A selection of the papers presented at the conference will be included in the project’s final volume, currently under editorial negotiation with Brill (series Translating Cultures in the Early Modern World) or with Routledge (series Multilingualism, Lingua Franca and Translation in the Early Modern Period).

This webinar served as a key public outreach initiative, providing a comprehensive presentation of the project’s objectives, methodologies, and ongoing activities. Each member of the research team contributed by outlining their specific lines of research, thereby offering an integrated view of the project’s interdisciplinary framework.
The event was conceived as a platform for the dissemination of methodological approaches and research practices, as well as for the presentation of preliminary results and future research directions. The webinar contributed to enhancing the visibility, accessibility, and impact of the project’s research outputs.
