CONFERENCE ‘SOTELO - 2024’

“Missionario, messaggero, martire. Luis Sotelo (1574–1624) tra l’Asia e l’Europa”

Organised on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of the Franciscan missionary Luis Sotelo (1574–1624), this international conference explored the religious, political, and cultural networks that connected Europe and East Asia in the early modern period. This event brought together scholars working on missionary history, global Catholicism, and intercultural mediation. It was organised by CNR – Istituto di Storia dell’Europa Mediterranea, the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Romani, and the Department FILCOSPE of Roma Tre University.

The event:

·gathered 14 scholars from 4 different countries

·fostered interdisciplinary dialogue on Franciscan missions, global circulation of knowledge, and the cultural mediation between Europe and Tokugawa Japan.
