EAGLE BAND
Eagle Band is our band for 6th graders at Dartmouth. In this class we teach the fundamentals of music literacy, rhythms, and note names. The class focuses on team-building for students who are new to music, and students who already play an instrument. Students will be able to read notes on a musical staff, understand, and perform Musical Grade 1-2 repertoire.
DO NOT WORRY if you do not yet have an instrument. We will preview all the instruments the first two weeks of school. Each year we host a “Band Welcome and Instrument Demo Night” for all 6th grade students and parents, where students get the opportunity to hear different instruments. In class, students will get to try different mouthpieces and discover which instrument might fit best.
Percussion: Percussion is an audition-only instrument. Students wishing to play Percussion in 6th grade will need to have prior piano experience. Potential percussionists will perform a two-handed piano piece of their choice as well as a Coordination Evaluation, on the second week of school to determine their proficiency.
Class Materials
We use a book we call “The “Red Book” (Standard of Excellence Book 1). Students may purchase this from Music Village (Union/Foxworthy) or other local music store, or online.
A list of what students need for each instrument can be found here.
If you are thinking of renting or purchasing your own instrument, please see our instrument recommendation page here.
