Class Overview
In both English Language Arts and social studies, students will be learning and refining their critical thinking skills, ability to analyze literary and informational texts as well as reviewing primary and secondary sources (including documents that range from early civilization engravings to documents such as the Declaration of Independence). Students will participate in various independent, group and whole-class activities as well as incorporating the outdoors to enrich our lessons/learning.
Expectations
In our classroom, we have clear expectations for all students to foster a positive learning environment. Students are expected to be respectful, accepting of others and safe.
We encourage students to conduct themselves in a manner which follows our core beliefs that we are safe, kind, responsible, and do our best.
As stated in the middle school overview sent out at the beginning of the year, parents/guardians will be contacted regarding repeated instances of inappropriate conduct in school, so that we may work together to maintain a respectful climate for learning. Please refer to the Student Handbook for a detailed outline of school rules and discipline procedures.
About Me!
I'm Kira Fontaine, a second-year teacher at Union School, and I teach both ELA and social studies for grades 6-8. I love reading, writing and learning new things each day with my students. I also enjoy connecting with nature whether it is going on a hike, reading outdoors or hammocking. Sharing this interest with my students, combined with the excellent opportunities to learn outdoors provided at Union School, I have been able to combine two things I love: nature and teaching!
