Updated Jul 8, 2022

Learn about our posting for a Transit Cleaner. Applications will be accepted through August 31.

Join the team that keeps the MTA safe and clean!

One of the MTA’s top priorities during the coronavirus pandemic has been maintaining a safe and healthy transit system for our customers, essential workers, and employees. To achieve this, we have ramped up our cleaning procedures for subway trains, stations, buses, and Access-A-Ride. MTA Cleaners play a critical role in this commitment to our customers — and we're looking for people to join the team.

What a Transit Cleaner does

Transit Cleaners sweep and wash subways and elevated stations, including steps, platforms, mezzanines, toilets, and related rooms and enclosures. They measure and mix cleaning chemicals, clean biological waste and sanitize effected areas. Transit Cleaners operate cleaning equipment, such as pressure washers, vacuums and sweepers, and perform light maintenance work on this equipment.

Transit Cleaners are also responsible for cleaning the interiors and exteriors of subway cars and buses in shops, depots, and on the road.  They also shovel snow and perform related tasks.

What does a Transit Cleaner do?

Application process

Applicants must apply online by August 31, 2022. Applications will not be available at any MTA locations.

Note: During the application process, you will see options to request special/religious accommodations and veteran’s credits. You will also see references to an examination and fee. Please disregard this information as it does not apply to the Transit Cleaner position.

How to apply:

If you experience issues logging in, contact the MTA Business Service Center at (646) 376-0123 or email bscservice@mtabsc.org. For all other questions or issues, please email the MTA Exams Unit at ExamsUnit@nyct.com

Selection process: Applicants will receive a random list number via email by September 30, 2022. As Transit Cleaner vacancies occur, applicants will be scheduled in random list number order for further consideration for appointment to Transit Cleaner which includes:

Vaccination requirement: As of November 14, 2021, MTA New York City Transit required all new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “Fully vaccinated" means having received both doses of a two-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the second dose, or having received a single-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the dose.

You can request a medical or religious accommodation from this requirement by forwarding your request to Workforce.Relations@nyct.com, or by calling 347-643-8209.
