Recently, people have debated whether teachers should teach Shakespeare in classes. Initially, I believed it should still be taught in classes. However, I decided to do some research on the topic before passing any final judgment on the matter. It isn't as cut and dry as I once thought.
People want to move away from reading Shakespeare in classes for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that there are more recent books that cover the same or similar topics as Shakespeare's novels that are more relevant to modern audiences. Many people cite the outdated ideas in many Shakespearian works as another reason to avoid reading them in the classroom. Misogyny, antisemitism, and racism are all in his works. However, his professions are classic, and many people believe there is value despite that.
To decide whether or not Shakespeare has value, I asked the people in our building who might have the most to say on this: the English department. Opinions varied, but what teachers seemed to think was it depends.
Some teachers believe there is still value in Shakespeare. Some, like Mr. Splendore, believe that "Shakespeare's stories are timeless and relatable and [...] we would be doing our students a disservice if we didn't expose our students to his work." "[...] the themes and genres within his works can manipulate time [..]," says Ms. Lore, who believes that his work is still relatable to students. Some teachers feel that teaching Shakespeare would only help them in the future. Ms. Moise states, "There are so many allusions in literature and film that children/adults will miss if they have never read Shakespeare." Ms. Saveth believes that "We should be sending our students to college with the same background as other schools are sending them to college [with] so that they have equal opportunities when they arrive in their first English classes." These are very valid arguments. Is the idea of learning Shakespeare about more than just learning his books for the sake of learning?
Some teachers, however, disagree with Shakespeare's importance in the classroom. "I just feel that it antiquated and with today, with all the technology, with kids on their phones so much, nobody going home and reading for enjoyment, and reading for fun, so, for the most part, you guys are reading when you're in school, so by doing Shakespeare which is something I don't think they relate to anymore and they kind of dread, it's causing them to dread reading even more where if we had more engaging literature they would hopefully be more engaged." This certainly begs the question, how do teachers keep their students' attention on something written in such old English in a more modern world? Is the language and the current attention span a barrier for students?
Some believe that it's more up to the teacher. In the words of Mr. Bowman, "It's the extent to which the teacher can make it relevant." He feels that it's all about the classroom environment that Shakespeare is being read in that determines its value. "I don't think Shakespeare is the end all be all; I do think that there are other great authors," says Dr. Latty, who emphasizes it is the teacher's choice what should be read in the classroom based on the students. Ms. Locurto says, "I do believe that the teacher needs to know her "babies" and what they are capable of in class. Some students would read a Shakespearean play well, and some would not. "
After hearing what the English department had to say, I have to hone in on the fact that it's complicated. Student engagement, teacher engagement, and the classroom environment can all change how the material is interacted with. How Shakespeare is being used can make all the difference. Yes, there are problems with his work; there are more modern books that teach the same ideas, and yes, it can be challenging to get students to pay attention, but I think the value of his work is at the discretion of both the teacher and students.
As Ms. Gascott said, "Being well-read and diverse in your selection is more critical than explicitly sticking to one required text/author. We don't need to praise Shakespeare as this almighty literary figure, but we can acknowledge that the flawed writings of a man alive centuries ago still impact the world today. His writings are just as valuable as the next, but knowing at least a little of what he's written wouldn't hurt.
Women’s sports doesn’t always get the respect it is supposed to receive, but instead, there are negative opinions about how different their way of playing is compared to mens’ sports. One major factor would be the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) since it doesn’t seem to have a big audience to begin with.
Based on the Forbes article it states”...the NFL has averaged 17 Million viewers per telecast, NASCAR 2.2 Million, MLB 1.4 Million and NBA 1.6 Million. On the other hand, the WNBA, founded in 1996, averages only 321,00 and that’s the best it’s done in 20 years.” It’s not even close to half of the NBA.
There is an argument between basketball viewers that they believe would benefit the WNBA; should women’s basketball lower their rims? Lowering the rim seems to catch a lot of people's attention since that would show more athleticism, especially from a man named Leonard Armarto. Based on his own editorial he explained the first WNBA game where he was watching one of the WNBA legends Lisa Leslie. He said, “I recall an exciting moment in the game when Lisa had a breakaway lane to the basket and tried to go up for a dunk…but as Lisa rose up to attempt to dunk she couldn’t quite get high enough and pinned the ball on the rim and the deflated crowd sighed in disappointment.” He also explained that even though Lisa became the first female player to dunk eventually, he would have rather had her make a dunk in that first game. Armato even argued that it would make sense for the rim to be lowered since women’s volleyball has the same treatment. He claimed, “I pointed out that in volleyball the net for women is 7 feet 4 inches and the men’s net is 8 feet. With the lower net, women are able to freely spike a volleyball in a manner similar to how the men do on the higher net.” And to be honest that would be a valid reason why basketball could do the same. He also talked about the excitement with ally-oops and dunks. In addition, he asserted “...there's no denying that dunks and alley-oops are among the most electrifying moments in the sport.
Despite the fact that there are plenty of good reasons, I still disagree with that decision. Although that may bring in more fans with more dunking, I have no doubt that the players won’t be happy with the changes. To back up my statement The article Business Insider includes the president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association Nneka Ogwumike explaining stating “now I have to relearn the game to appease people who don't want to watch it for what it is." It wouldn’t be fair for women players to try to adapt to the skills after the new changes. In fact, not all of the greatest NBA players are known for dunking, like Stephen Curry for example who plays for the Golden State Warriors. If every female player focused more than what they are better at instead, how long would it take you to realize the lack of them shooting 3 pointers?

Video Games have developed over the past couple of years from simple entertainment to multiple different worlds. With the development of technology, the question is of whether or not a video game is defined as art and nature rises. The purpose of writing this editorial is to explore the artistic elements of video games and that will provide insight into this amazing topic.
Art has historically been connected to the media that is like paintings, sculptures, and written works of literature for example. But video games defy this idea with their unique mix of graphics, narrative, soundtrack, and interactive features. Like other forms of art, video games have the power to evoke feelings, stir people’s mind, and tell fascinating stories.
The visual design and visuals of video games have advanced remarkably. These virtual words frequently have gorgeous scenery and easily created characters. Like the brushstrokes on a painting, the creative direction and attention to detail express the artistic purpose behind each game for example.
A video game’s ability is to tell a story that is essential to its classification as art. There are plenty of games with compelling storytelling that are in line with those movies or in books for example.
Video games are a form of art that has the ability to provoke strong feelings in people’s minds To provoke strong feelings in players, game designers use moving soundtracks, moody settings, and heartbreaking events. Video games can provoke a wide range of feelings in us, including happiness, excitement, fear, sadness, and reflection.
The interactive aspect of video games is to distinguish them from other artistic mediums. In contrast to passive media like reading a book or seeing an artwork, games can actively involve users in creating their own experiences. Video Gamer's can increase their sense of control and awareness by solving puzzles, making decisions, and exploring virtual environments.
The collaborative nature of artists, composers, writers, programmer, and designers is essential to the success of video game creation. Video games are like musical compositions or film productions in they combine multiple creative disciplines to produce an effortless and harmonious whole. Their significance as works of art is further cemented by their collective effort.
With the world becoming more digitally connected, video games have become an influential artistic medium. The boundary between interactive experiences and traditional creative forms is blurred by their ability to captivate, inspire, and challenge in both visual and narrative areas. Acknowledging the importance of video games that can lead to new creative and loving opportunities that can set the road for a time when technology and art work together happily. Let’s acknowledge and recognize the creative accomplishments of video games while we keep expanding the definition of what makes art.
A lot of students find it difficult to support themselves and pursue their education. Many find themselves having to hold down a job while attending their classes. For some, not working is not an option as their family often needs assistance in paying the bills. While some students may manage their studies and work, others may not. It is reasonable for some to claim that it is stressful and overwhelming.
Studies show that 70% of college students are stressed about finances. With work, school, activities, and friends all demanding attention, many students struggle with balancing and prioritizing the different areas of their lives. This demonstrates how many students can’t seem to enjoy their teen years due to the fact that they are so caught up with school & work.
Stress from maintaining a job and school has a negative impact on the mental health of young people. Feeling overwhelmed can-do major harm to your body and mind, increasing one’s vulnerability to both physical and mental health issues. It has been proven that high levels of stress hurt mental health. With the growing rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns being seen on campuses across the country one might wonder, “When is enough enough?”
With the demands of school, work and other obligations, it is important to find a way to manage it all. Speaking from experience, I have had to provide for your own financial needs while trying to achieve a career for my future. It has been extremely challenging to say the least. I have no other choice but to work. When there are days that I have to choose between work and school, work always wins.
Statistics show that access to higher education is further complicated for those with families or obligations outside of work and school, which often tighten financial and time constraints. As illustrated, this proves how teens seem to struggle more when they don’t have their families support and have to take care of their own personal needs. Although this may be a major issue, the outcome of being able to say that you are independent, and a hard worker is an accomplishment to many teens including myself.
Balancing school and work can be a difficult task, but it is a necessary part of life for most people. It might be particularly difficult for those who are trying to improve their life by going to school. Balancing school and work can be a challenge, but with the right strategies and attitude, it is possible to succeed.

Imagine the cultural rendezvous between Ecuador and the United States as a vibrant tapestry, woven with threads of language, communication styles, and culinary delights. In Ecuador, conversations take on a warm and polite tone, with people standing a tad closer, creating an atmosphere of friendliness. The communication dance involves a preference for indirectness, steering clear of bluntness to maintain a harmonious dialogue. This contrasts with the American way, where straightforwardness often takes the stage.
Now, let's talk flavors – a journey into Ecuadorian cuisine reveals a delightful fusion. Picture the mountainous regions, like Quito, where corn and potatoes reign supreme. On the coast, it's a different story, with rice, beans, and bananas taking center stage. From the succulent lechon (suckling pig) to the crispy llapingachos (fried mashed potatoes), Ecuadorian dishes paint a culinary canvas influenced by diverse cultures.
In the family album of Ecuador, you'll find more than just parents and kids; it's a multigenerational saga with grandparents, cousins, uncles, and aunts. This tight-knit family structure isn't just about sharing genes; it's about providing both economic and moral support. Together, they embark on adventures, whether it's a mountain retreat or a sandy escapade to the beach.
Shifting the spotlight to the U.S., imagine a cultural intersection where directness is the lead in the communication waltz. Picture a diverse culinary stage, with flavors borrowed from around the globe, echoing the immigrant mosaic that built the nation. Burgers, apple pies, and a sip of sugary drinks – a taste of the American tapestry.
In both lands, families play a starring role. In the U.S., families come in all shapes and sizes, united by a common thread of shared experiences and support. It's a cultural blend where respect for individualism is a key note.
So, in the grand performance of cultural exchange, Ecuador and the United States share a stage, each contributing its unique notes to the symphony of global diversity.
Does technology make us more alone?
By: E. Chavez
Technology is becoming more advanced and has helped us in many ways. Technology has changed the way we work, study, and live. It has made life easier for us, and it has many benefits. Technology is used in almost everything, in simple tasks and tasks that need a lot more work. Technology has been beneficial for us, but it has also shown to be distracting and makes us ignore what is around us. Technology makes us more alone because it makes us lose contact with the real world.
Technology has changed how we interact; sometimes, it can feel like it makes us more alone. Technology distracts us from the real world and the people around us. We receive constant notifications and get drawn to social media; it's easy to get caught up in our virtual lives and forget to engage with the people around us in the present moment. It is becoming a habit for many people to have technology around and record everything they see or do. This shows that many people care more about how they are represented on social media than in real life. Instead, They would share what they are doing on social media rather than enjoy what they are doing. While social media was created to connect with others, it also created a sense of isolation. People often compare their lives to others, leading them to feel lonely. What we see on social media is only a tiny fraction of someone's life and does not accurately represent them.
Many people have studied the effect technology has on us, and they have concluded that people who depend on their phones or technology have a higher rate of depression. Awareness of its potential impact on our sense of connection and loneliness is essential. It's important to be mindful of our technology usage by setting boundaries, making face-to-face interactions, and trying to connect with the people and experiences happening now in front of us. We can still use technology to enhance our relationships and experiences. We need to find that balance.
Social Media’s Impact on Youth
Social Media’s Impact on Youth
by: Jada Credle
Social media has become an aspect of people's lives molding social communications, one's self- esteem and image and one's own perspective on the world. This trend has a mix of negative effects, on the generation impacting their relationships, mental well-being and quality of life.
There are some aspects to the media. One of them is that it allows young people to connect with peers from over the world, promoting exchange and mutual understanding. It also provides a platform for them to openly express themselves, their creativity skills, accomplishments and life experiences. Social media can be a resource as well as giving access to a wide range of information and different perspectives. Moreover, it can play a role in sparking movements by enabling individuals to come together and advocate and fight for changes in the world, globally.
However the widespread use of social media also comes with plenty of disadvantages to people who do use it. One of the most major concerns is it’s negative impact on people’s wellbeing. Being constantly exposed to crafted and idealized depictions of others' lives can trigger comparisons and feelings of not measuring up. Seeking validation through likes and comments can establish a sense of self worth linked to approval which can have an effect on one's self esteem.
Furthermore, the captivating temptation of social media platforms crafted to enhance user involvement may lead to attention spans, heightened anxiety and create a fear of missing out. This can escalate when teens observe their peers seemingly indulging in fulfilling experiences. This constant connectivity can disrupt sleep routines, which in turn also affects wellness.
The impact of media on body image is also another major concern. Being exposed to beauty ideals can lead to a crippling dissatisfaction with one's own body and adopting unhealthy habits and behaviors, such as limiting how much food one eats and excessive work-outs. Moreover cyberbullying, which is made easier by the anonymity provided by platforms such as tiktok and instagram also poses a major conflicting risk to mental health of young people, which can also result in a spike and rise of depression, anxiety and suicide.
From a standpoint the quick availability of information through media can have both positives and negatives. While it offers an amount of knowledge, the absence of a mistake and presence of misinformation can lead to the distribution of likely false information. This poses a challenge for individuals in forming an opinion of information and having a critical judgment between trustworthy and unreliable information.
In summary, the influence of the media on people is a complicated and various occurrence. While it provides chances for connecting, expressing opinions, sharing creativity, and promoting activism, it also poses difficulties concerning mental health, self-esteem and the spreading of misinformation. Achieving an equal stance between the negative aspects, demands, and collective action from individuals, parents, teachers and those responsible for developing online platforms in order to acquire a healthier digital space for the younger population and people around the world.
