The beginner band course is created to introduce 6th grade students with little or no prior music experience to instrumental music. Students may choose to study flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, or percussion. This is a full year course and will take the place of any other specials electives. The 6th grade band will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.
Participation in the band program is extremely beneficial as students will engage daily in highly creative performances and activities that stimulate growth in areas of the human brain in ways no other discipline can. This growth effortlessly transfers into your student's academic life and will instill characteristics that prompt success and growth in and out of the field of music. Such characteristics include teamwork, responsibility, dedication, self-discipline, social skills, confidence, leadership and dependability. Participation in the Union County Band Program will provide a sense of pride, accomplishment and respect as the students develop musical and personal skills to enrich their lives. For more information, chek out the video below!
Students will be expected to work to maintain the high standard of excellence the program has portrayed in past years and will be required to practice a minimum of 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week to ensure their skills grow over time. This will be monitored through weekly practice logs as well as with in-class and online performance assessments.
Any student is able to join Beginning Band! To join, first watch the video below where members of the US Army Field Band demonstrate the instruments (keep in mind that oboe, bassoon, french horn, and percussion are only offered after 0.5-1 or more years of participation in the band program). Once you know which instrument is which, please complete the "6th Grade Beginning Band Sign-Up" Google form in the link provided below. Next, when made available, click on the link below to arrange an appointment for instrument testing with H&H Music at Union County Middle School (a notice will be sent out when this link is available). If this event is missed, students will need to be tested at the H&H Music Shop located in Evansville or at the UCMS Back-to-School Bash. Once tested and an instrument has been chosen, parents/guardians will need to purchase or rent an instrument from H&H, the school (limited instruments available), or on their own along with purchasing the required materials for said instrument. If purchasing of the required items (instrument not included) is an issue, please talk with the director about the possibility of arranging a payment plan through the school. For more information, check out the resources below.
