SOLE-H2 is structured around a set of coordinated research activities aimed at developing innovative solutions for the direct production of hydrogen from solar radiation.
The project integrates expertise in chemistry, materials science and energy conversion to address key scientific and technological challenges.
The main objectives of SOLE-H2 include:
Development of advanced materials
Design and synthesis of molecular and supramolecular systems (organic, inorganic and hybrid) for efficient solar light absorption and hydrogen production.
Solar-to-hydrogen conversion systems
Investigation and optimization of photo-driven processes for hydrogen generation from water, based on direct solar energy conversion.
Biohybrid approaches
Exploration of integrated systems combining chemical and biological components for the valorization of waste streams, including wastewater and lignocellulosic biomass.
System integration and scalability
Development of modular and decentralized configurations, with a focus on scalability from laboratory to application-relevant conditions.
Sustainability and materials selection
Use of abundant, low-cost and non-critical materials, in line with long-term sustainability goals.
The project follows a multidisciplinary approach, combining:
experimental research
materials design and characterization
system-level integration
with the goal of advancing the technology readiness of solar-driven hydrogen production systems.
SOLE-H2 aims to:
demonstrate the feasibility of direct solar hydrogen production
provide new materials and concepts for energy conversion
contribute to the development of sustainable and decentralized hydrogen technologies
