Membrane and Sustainable Technology Research (MSTR)

Welcome to the site of the Membranes and Sustainable Technology Research group (MSTR) at University of Calabria, Italy. We are a vibrant research group of researchers including graduate students, led by Sudip Chakraborty, Stefano Curcio and Vincenza Calabro for different aspects of membrane technology, Transport phenomena and Biotechnology. Water, Energy and Food security is becoming, more than ever, a pressing issue for many countries around the world, accompanied by a depletion of groundwater resources, scarcity of safe drinking water and energy crisis. So the membrane technology is come in business to solve most of the environmental problems in a sustainable way. Different membrane and their application is what we focus with a very high impact outcome. Many European countries are desalinating seawater , producing energies from renewable sources and also reducing environmental footprint in a sustainable way. Additionally many chemical processes, like most industrial processes, has a negative impact on the environment. They not only upset marine life, consume non-renewable resources and contribute to global warming, but their impacts can also lead to added costs and mitigation efforts. On the long haul, this is not a sustainable situation! To improve the sustainability we at UNICAL through different innovative and low cost research projects bring closer to achieving the goal of sustainability by membrane. We currently have a spectrum of research projects in this area. We are working on developing new membrane materials for various process. The aim here is that these new membranes should have improved properties, including higher flux, less fouling potential, lower ecological footprint, and improved mechanical integrity. We are also working on process modeling and optimization using advanced high end computing. This allows us a better understanding of this molecular dynamics and transport phenomena and how to increase its efficiency of a system.
