Below, we offer some information and suggestions on how to reach Montevideo, as well as recommendations for local city hotels and popular tourist attractions.
Montevideo, pronounced [/ˌmɒntɪvɪˈdeɪoʊ/], US also [/-ˈvɪdioʊ/]; Spanish: [monteβiˈðeo], is the capital and largest city of Uruguay.
According to the 2023 census, the city has a population of 1,325,000, about one-third of the country's total population, in an area of 201 sq km (78 sq mi).
Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata, an estuary that connects the Uruguay River and the Altantic Ocean that separates the south coast of Uruguay from the north coast of Argentina. Buenos Aires lies 230 km (140 mi) west on the Argentine side.
The city is located around the Plaza Independencia, where there was once a Spanish citadel. The square connects to the Old City, with art deco buildings, colonial houses and emblematic places such as the Palacio Salvo and the neoclassical Teatro Solís. The old Mercado del Puerto is full of restaurants to taste meat and wines.
WEATHER
The climate in Uruguay is temperate and humid (average 17 °C), with warm summers and more or less homogeneous rainfall throughout the year, and due to its latitude, between 30 and 35 º, the four seasons are clearly differentiated. However, there is a clear difference between the north and south of the territory. The area located in the extreme northwest of the country (Artigas, Salto, Rivera) is considerably warmer with an average of 18-19 °C and an average rainfall of about 1400 mm per year (the area in the extreme north has a typical “temperate subtropical” behavior). The South and East (Montevideo, Maldonado, Rocha, Lavalleja) on the other hand are cooler with an average of around 16 °C and 1000 mm annual rainfall (these areas have characteristics more similar to “maritime temperate”).
