The best way to understand what the final product of a collaboration between a faculty member and instructional designer is to see it live in Canvas. You can access a number of exemplary course design examples here:
Linked within this Canvas course are also eight full course shells you can preview by self-enrolling. We encourage you to browse through these to get a better idea of how online courses work at UNC Charlotte within our School of Professional Studies' online programs.
**Please note that these are full Canvas courses and the links should never be shared with students or anyone outside of the University.
In our course design, we use a template for course organization and structure. This ensures that students are easily able to locate important information they need to succeed. It also allows for branding within our online courses.
Our home page includes the course prefix and number and the course title. This helps students identify which course they are working in if they are enrolled in multiple courses. There is also an introduction and links to important information for getting started and accessing course content.
Our Syllabus page includes important information that the student needs about the course. These include a link to a document version of the syllabus, a course description, a list of course objectives, and course resources such as a meet your instructor page, a list of course materials, grading and feedback information, and course policies. We have also created a self-enroll course that is linked on this page that includes information about campus resources.
Our courses are organized by module and topic. Each module is broken into learning guides, content presentation, learning activities, and assessments. Students can view the Module page from the Home page and then access any of the content they need during that week.
Our learning guides are a summary for students outlining their expectations for the upcoming module. They include an overview describing what will be covered and how it relates to the big picture, a list of module objectives, a to-do list, and other information needed to successfully complete the module.
