Substance Use and Our Community: Viewing Substance Use and Readiness through a Systemic Lens
Natalie Ricciutti, PhD, LPCC
Counselors and other helping professionals often view substance use and addictions as individual issues, and typically focus on one-on-one forms of treatment. This can cause counselors to neglect the impact the community plays in substance use, treatment, and recovery. In this presentation, I will discuss the role an individual’s community environment plays in their treatment and recovery. I will provide information about the concept of community change readiness, and how counselors can assess the community’s readiness to change the issue of substance use. Finally, I will discuss the importance of community-level advocacy, and the responsibility counselors have in pushing for change at the mezzo-level.
