We came back from Fall Break to play some classics like Hangman. We also tried a new twist on an oldie but goodie- Reverse Charades (ask Michael).
We ended this year with another fun Game Night! We even added two new games to the MGSA game rotation- "Hues and Cues" and "Wavelength." We say goodbye to the 2023-2024 academic year, breathe a sigh of relief for this summer, and embrace all that's to come next fall!
MGSA officers Hannah Powell, Sarah Murphy, and Hal West-Page volunteered at this year's Julia Robinson Festival on Saturday, April 13th, 2024, along with graduate student Brennan Benfield, and professors Sarah Birdsong, Evan Wantland, Gary Crosby, and Evan Houstan.
This year, MGSA ran an activity tables where students constructed 2D and 3D shapes using Zome Tools. Students were encouraged to dip their creations in buckets of soapy water and watch as they created minimal surfaces!
Together with undergraduate and graduate volunteers, the MGSA enjoyed this years π-day celebrations under the most beautiful weather! We hosted primary school students from Hampton Education Academy, playing games and trivia to learn all about π. Selling exactly 100 pies, we've set a new record for ourselves- one we hope to beat next year! In all, most can agree that the π trivia is the most fun part of the day. Did you know that π has been memorized to over 100,000 digits? If you missed us this year, mark your calendar for next year for when we celebrate on 3/14/2025!
The MGSA kicked off this semester with a board game night! Students new and old met over free pizza and refreshments, learning many of the new faces of the mathematics department. Playing games such as Codenames, Zero to 100, and Bridge (to name a few) allowed the graduate students to relax and have some fun after the first month of the new year.
On Saturday April 1, 2023, MGSA officers Hayden Pecoraro and Sarah Murphy, along with Drs. Evan Wantland, Sarah Birdsong, Anna Athanasopoulou, Kevin McGoff, Eliana Christou, Xingjie (Helen) Li, and Harold Reiter, as well as undergraduate Kaylen Forney and members of the Alpha Omega Epsilon Sorority volunteered at the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival. The JRMF is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality and equity in mathematics education for students in K-12th grade.
At this event, our volunteers led two activity tables where they connected with young students by building polyhedra with zome tools and running the famous Buffon's Needle Experiment.
On Tuesday, March 14th, 2023, MGSA hosted the annual Math π Day Celebration and Career Fair. Following tradition, on March 14th, the Mathematics and Statistics Department celebrated its affinity for this much-loved date with free pizza, spin-to-win prizes, lawn games, and pies with the UNC Charlotte community. Additionally, multiple companies showed their support of UNC Charlotte students by hosting career tables overflowing with information and free prizes.
MGSA thanks the graduate and undergraduate volunteers for helping with this event in the cold weather. We also thank the faculty and staff of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for supporting this event. Lastly, we give a special thanks to Dr. Gabor Hetyei for photographing this event!
Many Tuesday nights in 2022 were spent at the Flyer Saucer. The self-proclaimed "Math Addicts" participated in the draught emporium's weekly trivia night, occasionally placing in the top 3!
Trivia happens every Tuesday from 7-9pm at The Flying Saucer, located 9605 N Tryon St A, Charlotte, NC 28262 near the JW Clay light rail station.
π day 2022 had pizza, games, pies and a career fair!
On February 26th, some of our members went bowling at Frye's Lake Lanes.
