To gain an understanding of what generational/age conflict is
To learn how to overcome generational conflict
To learn how to respect individuals time and values
Generational and age conflict arises whenever the interests or ideals of one generation collide openly with those of another (Britton, 2018).
The older generation prefers face to face communication while the younger generation prefers technology within their communication.
2. The younger generation tends to use slang in their writing or abbreviations that older generations disapprove of while at work.
3. The older generation value their job and do anything to make their spot permanent. The younger generation is fine with switching between jobs.
In order to overcome generational conflict, you must understand the different forms of communication and come to terms with what is needed in the moment. Formality should always be used in the workplace no matter the generation as it creates a line between your personal life and your work. Respecting the values that differ between generations is ideal for seeing someone else's point of view. It is important to understand that "all methods of communication have pros and cons, but the more thoroughly they are understood, the easier it will be to bridge the communication gap between generations" (Andal, Elizabeth. 2014). Even though there will always be disagreements, if both sides take the time to gain an understanding of the opposite opinions, it will be easier to get along and form better solutions as a team.
