Structural derivatization on metabolites isolated in appreciable quantity from their origin source or on extracts is carried out using different methodologies (use of classic reagents for functional group variation, hybridization, bioenzymatic chemistry, photostimulated reactions, ring distortion reactions, etc.) with the objective of obtaining useful structure-activity relationships for the design and synthesis of increasingly active, selective and less toxic molecules.

Taking advantage of the privileged and complex structures of natural products, our research aims to derive new compounds through ring distortion reactions. Our approach is to achieve expansions, contractions, fusions or rearrangements of ring systems to modify the architecture of the molecule. This strategy allows the generation of a wide diversity and chemical complexity in a few reaction steps, in turn allowing the exploration of the biologically relevant chemical space generated.
