How it all began...
The UMSL Social Peers Program was developed in 2021 by Dr. Lindsay Athamanah using the Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2000). The program focuses on addressing the students’ autonomy, competence, and relatedness within a framework aimed at (a) participant motivations and expectations, (b) valuable social-environmental contexts, and (c) the nature of relationships (Fisher et al., 2019).
Office of Inclusive Postsecondary Education (OIPE)
The OIPE (formerly known as UMSL Succeed) empowers through education by cultivating inclusion. Its vision is a campus where students with an intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) can live independently, learn in a supportive and inclusive environment, find meaningful employment, and be immersed in a rich social climate. UMSL Social Peers program co-directors, Dr. Lindsay Athamanah and Coordinator of Campus Inclusion, Madeline Siener, are part of the OIPE team.
