Semester reflection
Enhancing Student Attendance in SI Sessions
The group discussed challenges with students seeking shortcuts to academic support, such as requesting worksheets or recorded sessions instead of attending SI sessions. Rachel and Chanté shared strategies to encourage students to attend SI sessions by emphasizing the benefits of collaborative learning and verifying AI-generated answers with professors. Stacie and Katie discussed the impact of physical space on student attendance, noting that a more visible location may affect privacy preferences and attendance rates. The group also explored ways to reduce stigma around academic support services, including creating a culture shift, recruiting staff from specific programs, and encouraging student champions to promote these resources.
Enhancing Academic Support Visibility
The group discussed the success of moving tutoring spaces to common areas on campus to destigmatize academic support, with Mary noting increased numbers after the change. Chanté highlighted the importance of checking with campus partners to ensure accurate location information, as incorrect listings had occurred due to construction updates. Katie raised concerns about the perception of their program as a pilot, despite being a full academic support program, and sought advice on how to overcome this barrier and increase awareness. Stacie mentioned updating their website and conducting Google searches to identify outdated information, while Laine emphasized the benefits of being located near academic advising.
Securing Faculty Buy-In for Programs
Laine emphasized the importance of securing faculty buy-in to promote a program effectively, suggesting that integrating the program into syllabi and discussions throughout the semester could be beneficial. Katie acknowledged this as an area she needs to explore further and mentioned challenges with funding, which might prevent her from pursuing accreditation at the moment. Mary shared her experience with accreditation, noting its positive impact on faculty relationships, and recommended considering the process even if full accreditation isn't feasible. Laine suggested examining the accreditation process to enhance program understanding and communication with faculty and administrators.
