At Mizzou Black Creatives (MBC), our priority is uplifting Black artists and creators by creating opportunities for community and creativity.
The purpose of MBC is to create a safe space for Black artists to produce, share and perfect their art. MBC hosts events for the Columbia public, where people can let their creativity and ideas flourish.
"MBC feels is the perfect safe space for black creatives to be themselves. And to aid and uplift each other," student Shayla Blisset said. "In other art spaces, it can feel like we are competing to be seen or to have our work understood. But here, in a space by us and for us, there is no explanation needed."
MBC was founded in August 2022 at The University of Missouri-Columbia. We are not an official campus-affiliated organization yet, but will be soon. Our website features MBC events, involvement opportunities, current members and artwork.
Two students hold up their artwork at the Orr Street Studios Community Service Event in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday, Nov. 12. The event brought artists of all ages out to paint, design and talk.
We are an organization that fosters the creativity of Black artists. While we do not host weekly or bi-weekly meetings, we hold events that maintain a safe environment for people to share their ideas and work with each other!
