After recently moving to St. Louis to attend UMSL, I realized I knew very little about the city's history. Over the past three months, I've been immersing myself in the area's culture and environment. My curiosity was piqued by the decline of neighborhoods around the University of Missouri - St. Louis. So when I was given a research project I planned to focus on one neighborhood to understand the economic downturn. However, as I delved deeper, I found myself going down a rabbit hole of information. One significant discovery was the Delmar Divide, a concept unfamiliar not only to me, but to many of my classmates. I decided to research this divide to raise awareness of an issue that seems to be hidden in plain sight. During my exploration of the city, I noticed that I almost always chose to visit coffee shops and breakfast places south of Delmar Blvd. I didn't think twice about this unconscious preference until I understood the complex history and social dynamics of St. Louis. I believe that spreading awareness is the first step toward restoring economic prosperity to the northern neighborhoods and businesses.
