Summary of Keynote Speech: "Nanofiber: Pioneering the Future of ASEAN Industries"
In his keynote address, Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly from the Membrane and Nanofiber Research Lab at Universiti Malaysia Sabah explores the transformative impact of nanofiber technology on environmental sustainability. He highlights the integration of nanofibers with advanced antimicrobial agents such as silver nanoparticles, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, copper, and chitosan, enhancing their applications in air and water purification. Prof. Rosalam details how these embedded materials improve the fibers' ability to filter and deactivate a broad spectrum of pathogens and pollutants. Silver nanoparticles offer microbial resistance, titanium dioxide acts as a photocatalyst to degrade organic pollutants, zinc oxide provides UV protection and microbial control, copper imparts robust antimicrobial effectiveness, and chitosan offers a biodegradable alternative to enhance filter eco-friendliness. Additionally, he emphasizes the role of these enhanced nanofibers in oil spill remediation, noting their hydrophobic and oleophilic properties that make them highly effective in absorbing oils while repelling water, thus minimizing environmental damage from spills. Prof. Rosalam advocates for ongoing innovation and collaboration to advance and expand the use of nanofiber technology in addressing critical environmental challenges, including oil spill responses.
