Eleven years ago, on 12 March 2011 His Excellency Fidel V. Ramos, former President of the Republic of Philippines and Chairman, Ramos Peace and Development Foundation officiated the launch of the BIMP-EAGA Unit for Tourism Development (BE-UTD) here at School of Business & Economics (SPE), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). BE-UTD was set up to play a leading role in the development of sustainable tourism in the region. Full story as published in Bulletin SPE, UMS.

By 2017, BE-UTD was renamed the Borneo Tourism Research Centre with the acronym BTRC to continue focusing on tourism issues in the region.
