The Physician-Scientist Training Program adheres to ABIM Research Pathway policies and requirements to provide an integrated program that combines training in research with training in clinical internal medicine and its subspecialties. This pathway is recommended only for physicians who intend to seriously pursue a career in basic science or clinical research.
The mission of the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine Physician-Scientist Program is to provide future physician-scientists a wealth of opportunities on their journey from residency through fellowship and researc to a career in academic medicine.
The University of Minnesota began accepting residents into the ABIM Research Pathway in the early 2000s. The program was quite small, with perhaps one new resident each year and no more than two or three fellows in the pathway. The majority of trainees went into Cardiology. In 2012, Dr. Clifford Steer and Erik Peterson started as directors of the program, and recruitment efforts became more formal. In July 2025, Dr. Tyler Bold will step into the role of Program Director.
