Prior to 1976, there were no full-time Plastic Surgery-trained physicians at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bruce Cunningham became Chief of the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 1984, and began plans to establish a Plastic Surgery training program at the University of Minnesota.
In October 1990, provisional status was granted by the ACGME Residency Review Committee, and the first resident in the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Independent Program at the University of Minnesota was accepted.
The Integrated Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Program was approved as of July 2013, and since that time we have gradually increased our resident complement with both new PGY1 residents, and transfer residents. We graduated our first class of Integrated residents in June 2017.
