The University of Minnesota has a tradition of excellence in the education of competent plastic surgeons. Our program offers exposure to all aspects of plastic surgery in a variety of settings. In addition to a traditional university setting, residents spend more than half of their time training in affiliated teaching hospitals and with private practice plastic surgeons in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Our integrated program includes general surgery training during the first two years within the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery, one of the top in the nation, to complement our comprehensive plastic surgery training. The integrated model allows for expansion of the curriculum to include rotations the American Board of Plastic Surgery recommends for developing excellence in plastic surgery including orthopedics, ENT, oral surgery, burn surgery, anesthesia, dermatology, and oculoplastics.
Our city-wide faculty brings a diversity and breadth of exposure that makes us unique and allows our residents to develop into exceptional plastic surgeons. We welcome your interest and warmly invite you to contact us with specific questions.
The mission of our program is to provide excellent clinical care in all aspects of Plastic Surgery, and to use this clinical base to provide a robust and well-balanced educational experience for trainees at all levels. We are particularly dedicated to educating the next generation of Plastic Surgeons to become exceptional clinicians, clear and insightful scientific thinkers, and generous citizens with unimpeachable ethical qualities and a dedication to service.
We strive to train plastic surgeons who will serve their communities well, primarily through direct patient care. Our goal is to be a top-tier clinical program within the next ten years. We expect that our trainees will focus on quality improvement projects and clinical research as residents, learning to critique their own and others’ evidence as our field continues to develop. We aim to train the next generation of surgeons, who are able to pursue careers in academic or private practice, and continue the international service work which they are exposed to as trainees.
The University of Minnesota Medical School is focused on the future of medicine. For us, that means how we work together, how we bring science and medicine together, and how we view our responsibility to our state. We hope you'll take a moment to read and view these stories that share a few of the things we're proud to be working on.
