Mission Statement
The goal of the Orthopedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG) is to provide medical students with opportunities to learn about the field of orthopedic surgery early on in their medical education. Through organizing events, we will assist students in exploring the specialty of orthopedic surgery, creating a network of supportive peers and mentors, and preparing for clinical rotations and residency applications. We will strive to create an inclusive and collaborative environment so that all students feel welcomed and supported as they determine which specialty to pursue.

President | kell3372@umn.edu
Hello and welcome to the University of Minnesota Medical School Orthopedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG) website! We’re so glad you’re here! My name is Jack and I have the honor and privilege of serving as the OSIG president for the 2026/2027 cycle.
I am originally from St. Paul, but took some time away to study English and do my pre-med requirements at the University of Notre Dame. When I am not spamming anki cards or planning OSIG events, I love to spend time with my family and friends, play card games, lift weights, or ride my bike.
My current favorite bone is the patella, but the hyoid is a close second.
Please feel free to reach out to myself (or any other board member) about anything ortho or med-school related!
Go bones!! 🦴
RJOS Representative | wethi008@umn.edu
Hello! My name is Madeline, and I have the pleasure of serving as the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society Representative. By the end of medical school, I’ll have the privilege of being a three-time Gopher graduate, having completed my undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Minnesota while playing Division I hockey. Ski-U-Mah & Go Gophs!
I’m the oldest of four girls and do my best to get home for a family meal as much as I can. I love staying active and involved in sports, whether that’s running, biking, pickleball, golf, slalom skiing, or coaching hockey. I’m always on the hunt for the best ice cream, coffee shops, or sushi spots, so please send recommendations my way!
I’m most interested in orthopedic sports medicine, but I genuinely find all orthopedic subspecialties fascinating and am excited to learn more while helping others get excited about orthopedic surgery as well. Reach out anytime!
Director of Communications | wethi009@umn.edu
Hello! My name is Audrey, and I have the pleasure of serving as Director of Communications. In this role, I manage our Instagram (@osigumn), send out newsletters, and help keep our website up to date. If you ever have opportunities to share with OSIG, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I completed both my undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, where I also played Division I hockey.
I love spending time outdoors through running, biking, rollerblading, hiking, and skiing. I also enjoy taking group fitness classes. I have discovered a passion for coaching and currently volunteer as a Division III women’s ice hockey coach and a high school hockey coach, which has been an incredibly rewarding way to give back to the game.
Please feel free to reach out anytime. I would love to connect!

Nick Sanford
St. Cloud Representative | sanfo285@umn.edu
Hello, my name is Nick and I am the St. Cloud representative for the Orthopedic Surgery Interest Group. I have lived all over central Minnesota, but am originally from Princeton. After being discharged from the military I started college to follow my passion for sports medicine as an Athletic Trainer. Later, I realized I wanted to do more and shifted my focus to becoming a doctor with the goal of becoming an ortho surgeon.
My wife and I have three young children that keep us busy, but when we do have some free time we enjoy traveling, trying new foods, playing board games, or going on family bike rides.
