A policy is a governing principle that mandates or constrains actions. Department policies align operations and set behavioral expectations within the department. OLPD departmental policies are designed to complement policies set by the University of Minnesota and by the College of Education and Human Development.
Procedures are steps taken to comply with a policy or enact a departmental function. While policies are governing documents that outline what is allowed and what can be done, procedures are instructional documents that explain how to do things. In general, OLPD departmental policies have been formally developed and approved by departmental committee and/or full departmental vote. Departmental procedures may have been informally accepted as the way to enact departmental policies or carry out the work of the department.
Suggestions for changes or additions to departmental policies and procedures should be submitted to the Administrative Director.

Mass-emails to OLPD students
If you want to send a message to OLPD's enrolled graduate students, undergraduate students, or a subset of either, reach out to Alex Evenson and specify the group. There are listservs available as well as other options (see below), but we want to make sure the lists are up to date so newly-enrolled students aren't missed and non-enrolled students aren't included by accident.
Mass emails via Salesforce Marketing Cloud
Contact OLPD communications (olpd@umn.edu) for assistance with this.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SMC) is a software application that the University uses to send out "polished" email announcements and e-newsletters. Messages can be configured to come from any email address or name (for example, a message could come from the address olpdadmin@umn.edu, but read "From Ken Bartlett, OLPD Chair <olpdadmin@umn.edu>."
It is appropriate to use SMC to send announcements or communications that are of relatively high strategic priority and would benefit from extra aesthetic polish. Setting up a message in SMC is more labor-intensive than using Gmail, however, so please use discretion. If you're unsure, reach out to Alex Evenson for advice.
Channels for dissemination
There are a number of channels we can use to disseminate news & information. Here's a quick overview of the main ones along with some info about how to utilize them:
Burton Brief is a weekly e-newsletter that goes out to everyone in CEHD on Wednesday afternoons. Content includes College News, Faculty and Staff News, Alumni News, International news, Upcoming Events, and postings of jobs within CEHD. Email Alex Evenson with content for Burton Brief. Weekly deadline is Monday, noon.
The CEHD News Blog is a web tool that allows CEHD communicators to create news articles and posts that can be shared individually or streamed on websites via custom feeds. OLPD's home page, for example, displays a feed of news blog posts tagged with "OLPD." The main CEHD website displays a feed of posts tagged with "CEHD Main Site." Posts can be anything ranging from short blurbs (example) to long original feature stories (example). Email Alex Evenson with content for the CEHD News Blog.
OLPD has a Twitter account. Tag @umn_olpd with any content you'd like that account to amplify.
