Master Gardener Volunteer Program Update Regarding Extension’s Changes to Covid Exemption Process and Safety Protocols

As the pandemic has changed, so has the guidance from the Governor and University of Minnesota Extension’s leadership. During this transition, the COVID safety protocols will continue to be adjusted. Always check with your local leaders and the Master Gardener Volunteer site for the latest update. At this time, there are a few updates, effective immediately to the COVID-19-related protocols the Master Gardener Volunteer Program has been following for activities.

Changes to COVID-19-related protocols

For MGs that are fully vaccinated (CDC definition of Fully Vaccinated):

  • Unless required by a city/county policy, a venue, a collaborating organization or otherwise requested or posted, vaccinated volunteers may choose not to wear a mask when representing University of Minnesota Extension as a Master Gardener volunteer. Fully vaccinated volunteers can also carpool to an activity but should wear masks. However, volunteers are welcome to remain masked and drive separately if they choose.

For MGs that are not fully vaccinated:

  • The University, Extension and the Master Garden Volunteer Program expect volunteers who are not fully vaccinated to wear a mask indoors. When gardening outdoors and in areas that allow a six-foot radius of physical distancing, mask-wearing is optional, unless required by a city/county policy, a venue, a collaborating organization or otherwise requested or posted.

In addition to changes in the protocols, University of Minnesota Extension has announced that on July 1, the exemption process will be discontinued. For exemptions that have already been approved, the expectation is that COVID safety protocols will be honored, with the exception of those listed above. Exemptions should continue to be submitted by local coordinators and leaders for activities that take place on or before June 30.

In place of the exemption process, and beginning after July 1, decisions will be made by the local Master Gardener leadership about volunteer activities in your community. The decisions will be driven by several factors including local COVID-related rules, the scope of activities and their value to the community, as well as the comfort and readiness of volunteers in your group. You can contact your local leaders with questions. As the situation continues to change, updates will be announced. Here is a link to a FAQ guide related to the changes.

As things transition and volunteer opportunities increase, please know we are aware that Master Gardeners will vary in their response to these changes. We encourage you to find a way to volunteer that is comfortable for you, including the three approved at-home activities. Please record the hours you are able to volunteer in the database on the Volunteer Google site. However, if you are not able to complete the required volunteer hours this year, your volunteer status will not be negatively affected. It is important that you feel safe, comfortable and supported as you make choices about your Master Gardener volunteer activities that are best for you and your family.

Thanks for all your hard work and creativity as we continue to navigate this challenging time. If you have questions, please contact your local leaders or the state team at mgweb@umn.edu.
