Resiliency: Extension Horticulture’s Vision for Managed Landscapes in Minnesota
MORE FREQUENT SEVERE weather events and the introduction of invasive pests have exacerbated the negative effects of limited species diversity in managed landscapes. University of Minnesota Extension Horticulture envisions harnessing species diversity within managed landscapes to improve overall resiliency in the face of our continually changing climate. Dr. Brandon Miller and Educator Laura Irish-Hanson will discuss factors that impact landscape success, plant selection criteria, species for expanding plant palettes, and how to approach landscape challenges.
Brandon Miller, State Extension Specialist
Dr. Brandon Miller is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota and the Curator of Plant Collections at the Landscape Arboretum.
Laura Irish-Hanson, Extension Horticulture Educator
Laura Irish-Hanson is the statewide Extension Educator for Resilient Managed Horticultural Landscapes. She is a leader for promoting managed horticultural landscape systems through multiple perspectives in collaboration with property owners, community organizations, urban stakeholders, and others at the University of Minnesota.
Water Wisdom: Using a Hands-on Activity To Educate about Clean Water
AS THE CLIMATE changes, Minnesota will see increased precipitation and more extreme weather. Broader public understanding about the interactions between plants, soil and water will be critical. Using a simple, hands-on, inquiry-based activity, we will explore these complex relation-ships and share best practices for communicating about clean water and other larger scientific concepts with adults. Come ready to play in the dirt!
