There is no break in employment during holidays, winter break (December 19, 2025-January 20, 2026) or spring break (March 9-13, 2026). Students should continue to work their regular weekly hours.
If you need time off, you can bank your hours (i.e. work more hours one week and have fewer hours the following week, etc.). Please arrange this with your supervisor(s) in advance.
Visit mch.umn.edu/imptdates/ for other important dates!
File and refer back your offer letter so you know your pay rate, dates and what type of classification you're in.
Your deployment is contingent upon the continuing availability of work and funds for the position and on your satisfactory work performance. Stipends depend on the project, Center funding and the number of deployments offered in a given year.
See the below for more details about your position, taken from your UMN/EpiCH offer letter templates.
University Non-Service (UNS) Internships (Job Code # 9584) will be compensated through a stipend.
The pay period is 14 days in length, and you will be paid bi-weekly (every other Wednesday). OHR's pay calendar will let you know when you can expect your first paycheck.
You have fixed pay, meaning your paycheck contains the same amount every paycheck. You are responsible for tracking/adjusting your hours to ensure you average your weekly hours.
For example, if you are deployed for 7 hours/week and need to work 5 hours one week, you should adjust your hours the following week so you work 9 hours the next week. Be sure to check in with your supervisor before adjusting your hours.

Under this appointment, you are not eligible for sick leave; vacation; health plan benefits; Regents’ Scholarship; University retirement plans; or layoff rights.
All projects must be completed and the final stipend payment made by the grant budget end date (June 30 of every year)

You may log into OneStop and see a message about a "Payroll Fellowship." This is OneStop's way of documenting your classification as an intern (UMN job code 9584).
If you have questions:
Review your financial aid history (if applicable): There should be a record of a payroll fellowship from the last academic year.
Email OneStop (include your student ID number in your email) and let them know that SPH's HR and payroll have confirmed that you're in the correct job code (9584) and that you should be receiving bi-weekly payments as an Intern.
Confirm that what's listed under "Payroll Fellowship" is simply documentation that you're receiving funds for your internship role under job code 9584.
If you'd like to copy Sara, feel free (no need to copy EpiCH payroll or HR).

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) considers “non-qualified” fellowship amounts to be taxable income, which you are responsible for reporting on your tax return.
Neither the Center nor the UMN is required to file a return of information (W-2 or 1099-M) or report your fellowship to the IRS.
CONTACT: For tax-specific details related to this appointment, please see Tax Information for Non-Service Fellowships. For further questions, email (ohr@umn.edu) or call UMN OHR (612-624-8647 or 800-756-2363).
Center positions do not require the submission of time cards through the UMN/OneStop.
When you're logged into your MyU portal, you may see a notification that tells you to submit your time. This is an auto-generated notification for students who are in the UMN's HR/payroll system. You can ignore.
Your supervisor may ask you to keep track of your hours.
