MBA students are allowed to take up to 8 credits of pre-approved courses from outside the Carlson School Masters Programs through the Elective Petition Process. This is a great way to personalize elective selections and tap into the wide array of academic disciplines taught across our research university.Â
Courses must be graduate level (5XXX, 6XXX) within the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and have an A-F grading scale. All students wishing to take courses from outside the Carlson School Masters Programs must request permission, prior to taking the course, to receive MBA credit for the proposed courses. If approved, the course credits can be used as general elective credits towards the student’s program.Â
Notes:
The MBA Program does not allow students to pursue majors or minors.
MBA students are not eligible to enroll in Carlson School Specialty Masters Program courses that are considered equivalent to courses offered in the MBA Program for credit towards their degree requirements.
Dual degree Full-Time MBA students are not eligible to petition for additional coursework from outside of the Carlson Masters programs to contribute towards their MBA requirements due to the existing credit-sharing structure of program agreements.
The University of Minnesota offers many tools that may be useful in locating courses outside the Carlson School Masters programs:
Schedule Builder - includes ability to search for courses by keyword by semester
Search on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities website for course descriptions on department websites
Students will work with the programs office for the graduate degree program offering the course to inquire if MBA students are eligible to enroll in the class of interest. Their staff will be able to share if there are any additional required steps like connecting with the instructor for enrollment permission or completing a form to request enrollment.
Complete the Elective Course Petition Form (download the form to complete and email to aaset@umn.edu).
In addition, a copy of the course syllabus may also be requested.
Your academic advisor will notify you of the outcome of your petition as soon as possible.
