The Accounting Department at the Carlson School approaches the field of accounting in relation to other disciplines including economics, finance, and the social sciences. These elective course options allow further development of accounting knowledge beyond core required MBA courses. Students can use Schedule Builder or the MyU Class Search tool to view when courses are typically scheduled.

Students with a further interest in accounting courses may also use the Elective Petition Process to take additional graduate courses through the Carlson School Master's of Accountancy and/or Master's of Business Taxation Program.
Students can use available MBA coursework to contribute towards their Minnesota CPA education requirements. Generally, in addition to completing their MBA, students need 15 graduate credits in accounting and need courses covering the areas of financial accounting, managerial accounting, audit, and tax. Available courses in the curriculum include:
MBA 6031 Financial Accounting (3 credits) - MBA core course (previously MBA 6030)
MBA 6035 Managerial Accounting (3 credits) - MBA core course for Part-Time MBA students, students in other programs may take as an elective
ACCT 6102 Financial Statement Analysis (2 credits) - MBA elective (previously MBA 6100)
ACCT 5121 Auditing Principles & Procedures (2 credits) - Students eligible to use Elective Petition Process to take towards their MBA electives
ACCT 5122 Data Analytics & Technology in Auditing (2 credits) - Students eligible to use Elective Petition Process to take towards their MBA electives
ACCT 5135 Fundamentals of Federal Income Tax (4 credits) - Students eligible to use Elective Petition Process to take towards their MBA electives
