I have Japanese Beetles. What can I do about them?

While Japanese Beetles aren't found in all parts of Minnesota, they're formidable nuisances where they do reside. Find more information about this pest through University of Minnesota Extension Yard and Garden.

• Japanese Beetle Traps are not an effective method of management. Traps are unable to catch all that they attract, meaning beetles will consume your nearby plants.
• Most plants can be managed by hand-picking the beetles, but larger plants may require professional help.
• Choose plants that are more resistant to Japanese Beetle damage, as found through the University of Kentucky.
• Treating grubs to decrease adult beetle populations is not an effective means of control.

Why isn't my tree producing as much fruit this year, compared to last year?

There are many factors which may affect fruit production. Ask follow-up questions, and consider the following:

• Pest or disease issues may reduce crops
• Nutrition issues may affect flowering and fruit set
• Cold spring weather can impact flowers, which reduces fruiting later
• Some trees naturally vary their production from year to year

Can I prune my oak trees?

Most often, people are worried about spreading Oak Wilt when they ask about pruning oak trees.

• Oak wilt is spread by sap beetles. Do not prune when sap beetles are active, April through mid-July
• Cover unavoidable wounds with paint or shellac April through mid-July to avoid infection
• November through March is the safest time to prune oak trees
